Quick review of “A Prophet”

A Prophet premiered at the Cannes film festival earlier this year and made quite a splash.  Since then it’s been rounding up numerous critics awards and has been named as France’s official entry in the race for best foreign film at the Oscars.  It’s a violent, stylish prison drama detailing a young Arab inmate’s rise to power. 

I was shocked to see that this is star Tahir Rahim’s first film, and if it weren’t for him being an unknown actor in a foreign film I’d say he’d be a lock for numerous awards.  Definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Jane Campion, director of the upcoming Bright Star, made this short film back in the mid ’80’s.  The film won the Palme d’Or for best short at Cannes.
